Knowledge and Shift in Fichte’s Standpunktlehre

Abstract:As the title suggests, this paper will focus on the connection between knowledge and shift or displacement as it takes shape in Fichte’s thought. Jorge Standpunktlehre Standpoint Abstract:As the title suggests, this paper will focus on the connection between knowledge and shift or displacement as it takes shape in Fichte’s thought. However, in order to understand the topic I propose to address, we should bear in mind that I am not talking about shift or displacement in any of the common senses of these terms. Rather, I am talking about a very specific kind of shift or displacement which, according to Fichte, although it is always taking place (and is in a sense the spark that ignites everything), usually goes completely unnoticed. It is like a great ‘eminence grise’ in everything. As a result, the very specific kind of shift or displacement that is the subject of this paper is not usually included in the semantic spectrum of either word. Moreover, Fichte’s view of this particular kind of shift is linked to something that at some point came to play an important role in his thought: his concept of standpoint (Standpunkt). Prima facie, this concept seems to denote something of which we usually have at least some idea. On closer inspection, however, it turns out to be largely a ‘false friend’. For what Fichte means by ‘standpoint’ is quite different from what we usually associate with the word. And this specificity has a lot to do with its connection to the said shift or displacement – or rather, to that very particular kind of shift or displacement that tends to be an ‘eminence grise’ in everything and yet almost always escapes detection. All in all, then, one of the ways of getting a clue to a) the said ‘eminence guise’ (let us call it the primordial or proto-shift viz. the proto-displacement) and b) the specificity of Fichte’s understanding of ‘standpoint’ is precisely to see how closely they are related. This is precisely the path we will try to follow.
