Arundhati Roy’s second novel displays a particularly dense mesh of intertextual and intermedial references to other literary texts, poems, contemporary installations, as well as to social media, apps, and other semiotic systems. This article analyses a selection of those apparently discrete and eclectic choices, and tries to demonstrate that those external references enrich and cross-pollinate Roy’s work, helping her in particular to structure the novel through subtle connexions, and to find a deeply personal literary language for her social commitment, in particular against the danger and violence of simplified identities.
