Will Self’s most personal novel, How the Dead Live invites the reader to share the destiny of Lily Bloom, an atypical heroine, before and after her death. Lily’s story start with an epilogue, which begins in 1999 and goes back in time to 1988, the year she died. In a Joycean monologue interspersed with partially remembered dialogues, and various episodes—among which Christmas 2001, the year of her reincarnation—Lily, always accompanied by Lithy, her lithopedion, reconstructs her past life and evokes her bitter vision of the world in a crude language, uncompromisingly, not without self-derision or a sarcastic sense of humour. |
