The School of London, a phrase that was coined in the late forties in Great Britain, incarnates the survival of humanistic figurative painting in the contemporary era. With artists such as Michael Andrews, Frank Auerbach, Francis Bacon, Lucian Freud and Leon Kossoff among its ranks, it began to be widely exhibited and discussed in the eighties and nineties. This essay hopes to give an account of the School of London as a critical and cultural concept, based on representations of national artistic achievements as well as on eclectic historical references ranging from the Grand Manner to a largely idealized post-war context. The exhibitions and writings about the School of London are therefore more about the present than about the past, as they give insight into the British art scene of the late twentieth century. The individual reception of painters such as Francis Bacon and Lucian Freud was also influenced by the collective, traditionalist and sometimes overtly retrograde perspective that characterized the phenomenon as a whole. Conversely, one may see the School of London as a cultural and historical construct that came to embody British Art at home and abroad in a specific international context.
