The emergence of a Grand Paris metropolitan area over the past decade has raised significant questions about the ways of inhabiting this new but historically complex entity, of engaging with the territory not only materially but symbolically and emotionally. A number of contemporary photographers have been called upon to suggest a representation of territorial identities perturbed by this symbolic expansion. Characteristic of the recent social turn, these projects involve the participation of local inhabitants. The corpus considered here is representative of this contemporary current of the late 2010s. Beyond the specific features of three photographic styles, this study examines the creative approach, the ways it reveals the construction and/or persistence of a “suburban life” disrupted or reactivated by the invention of the Grand Paris and, more broadly, how it raises questions bordering on social issues, public policy and aesthetics.
