The present essay distinguishes three phases in research on Roman architecture as it has developed since the 1950s. While architecture was approached, in the post-World War II years, as an art whose nature needed to be determined, the 1960s witnessed a fundamental change in the interpretation of monuments. Architecture was perceived more and more frequently as the product of a specific sociopolitical context. The most recent research has turned more towards examining the place of the individual in Roman society and the way in which he reacted to his environment.Replacing architecture in its topographic context and calling upon additional sources to reconstruct the spaces of representation and action in Antiquity as accurately as possible are currently the most important enterprises. The perspectives they offer are evoked in the conclusion.
