The writings, both religious and literary, of Monsignor Ronald Knox (1888-1957) are well-known and continue to inspire and amuse readers to this day; those of his closest sibling, Winifred (1882-1962), much less so. The brother and sister both wrote detective fiction which reflects their Christian v...

The brother and sister both wrote detective fiction which reflects their Christian values and their settings often echo their personal experiences of people and places. Grandchildren of one bishop, children of another and acquainted with many more, Roman Catholic Ronald and, later, Anglican Winifred both created fictional bishops in one of their crime novels and explore there something of their vision of the ministry of a bishop and how this works out in the life and ministry of the Church. The story of Winifred’s bishop may, indeed, be seen as a more realistic response to her brother’s idealistic portrayal, a reminder to him of their childhood experiences and a celebration of clerical marriage.
