Depuis la fin des années 1980, la ville de Ouarzazate, située dans une région semi-désertique et isolée du Sud marocain, derrière le massif de l’Atlas, est souvent désignée comme le « Hollywood marocain ». Après une enquête exploratoire sur le terrain en mai 2025, les auteurs de l’article ont cherché à comprendre la signification de cet imaginaire, par un retour sur l’histoire du cinéma au Maroc durant la période du Protectorat. Using the case of Morocco, this article offers a reflection on the film industry and its globalized geography. From a socio-historical perspective, the article questions the place occupied, by the "studio" as a filming location, and the recurrence of a mythology of the industrial integration of cinema, embodied by the Hollywood model. Since the end of the 1980s, the city of Ouarzazate, located in a semi-desert and isolated region of southern Morocco, behind the Atlas Mountains, is often referred to as the "Moroccan Hollywood". After an exploratory field survey in May 2025, the authors of the article sought to understand the meaning of this imaginary, by returning to the history of cinema in Morocco during the Protectorate period.
