Le discours politique est sans ambiguïté, mais, comme on pouvait s’y attendre avec Fritz Lang, il est exposé au fil d’une intrigue à la fois sinueuse et implacablement logique. C’est cette mise en forme narrative remarquable qui est principalement commentée ici, en mettant notamment en évidence un certain nombre de figures récurrentes, qui ne s’épuisent pas dans leur valeur métaphorique mais rappellent, s’il en était besoin, le goût de Lang pour l’image construite et expressive. In early 1941, a German who had been driven from his country by Nazism and had become a filmmaker in the United States jumped at the opportunity to make a film that openly advocated US intervention in the war. The political message is unambiguous, but, as one might expect from Fritz Lang, it is presented through a plot that is both convoluted and relentlessly logical. It is this remarkable narrative structure that is the main focus of discussion here, highlighting a number of recurring figures that are not limited to their metaphorical value but also serve to remind us, if necessary, of Lang's taste for constructed and expressive imagery.
