Based on a study of the characters from Hardy’s later novels (Jude and Tess in particular), it argues that the latter mainly represent man confronted with destiny, in accordance with the genre of tragedy which Hardy wanted to transfer to the realm of the novel. I show that these novels question the possibility of creating an ethical life, that is to say, in Aristotle’s terms, a good life. This questioning is then articulated with the aesthetics of Hardy’s novels: it is that very aspect of Hardy’s work which allows to see it as truly creative and able to give examples of action – rather than realistic.
