His study on exile and return from exile first of all sets the major issue of the loss of the native language. If all reasons for exile can be summed up in the call of the sea, those for the return from exile are best epitomised in the title of the prose poem, “You are at the bottom of my mind”. Finally, Crichton Smith’s answer to the aporia of the departing island is his own return ad patres, as developed in his last collection of poems, The Leaf and the Marble. You are at the bottom of my mind ».
