The decline is attributed to shifting educational priorities favoring subjects like computing and economics, as well as a broader crisis in sport pedagogy. The author identifies four major misconceptions that have contributed to this crisis : (1) assuming that sport as a social phenomenon inherently holds educational value, (2) relying on rigid, institutionalized models of sport, (3) overemphasizing school-based PE while neglecting broader social dynamics, and (4) methodological isolation limiting empirical research. The article argues that PE’s justification should be reconsidered in light of contemporary adolescent development challenges, emphasizing social support, identity formation, and well-being. Empirical findings suggest that participation in physical activities enhances self-concept, social integration, and stress management. The author contrasts different PE models, advocating for an approach that integrates school-based and extracurricular sports. Ultimately, the article calls for a redefined, empirically supported PE framework that actively contributes to adolescent development in an evolving educational landscape. |
