This essay is a speculative piece written by someone who is both a literary critic or historian and also his subject’s biographer and so it does not always follow a conventional academic paradigm. The talk concerns broad questions of influence in relation to Iris Murdoch’s fiction, and is organized in three parts. In the first I explore the idea that Iris Murdoch was protean, both in her inward self, as also in her early novels. The middle section sketches the influence of three very different precursors: Raymond Queneau, Walter Scott, and Elias Canetti. Finally I move to the question of Murdoch’s importance for other novelists. In the space available, much can be finger-painted only of questions that—hopefully—others may wish to explore further and in greater depth. |
