Using various examples from iconic travel authors of this era (Greene, Fleming, Stark, Auden, Isherwood, etc.) this paper aims to examine the careful staging of the ‘death of travel’ in Interwar Britain, demonstrating its potentiality as the instrument of a dramatic rebirth. The latter notably entailed the negation, fragmentation and/or over-accumulation of its conventions, but also their transcending and reinterpretation leading to the reinvention of the genre. This literary revolution (understood in terms of innovation but also cyclical reiteration) contributed to the outstanding success of interwar travel writing and explains its emblematic value in British literary history.
