Virginia Woolf’s narrative strategy was often understood as exemplifying feminine writing. The author herself undoubtedly contributed to this approach when she praised Dorothy Richardson for her invention of a ‘woman’s sentence’, in which some of the characteristics of her own style could be recognised. The Waves is usually considered as her masterpiece as regards her writing and narrative technique. However, a close reading of the novel rather leads to question the notion of feminine writing. Neither a feminist novel, nor a feminine novel, The Waves writes the feminine: it strikingly exposes the logic of sexuation as Lacan exposed it, but thus goes against the theoretical grounds of feminist readings.
