As Ian Hague’s book Comics and the Senses has pointed out, admitting the obviousness that “materiality matters” implies “challenging the idea that comics are a purely visual medium.” Engaging Hague’s proposition, this article focuses on a “Disque d’aventure” produced by Festival, a French record label, in 1960: Alix l’intrépide. The first episode in the French-language comics series Alix by Jacques Martin, The Intrepid Alix, had been serialized in Tintin magazine (1948-49), then released as a comics album (1956), before being adapted by Jean Maurel into an audiobook on LP vinyl record (1960). As a first step towards a multisensory approach to comics, this article deals with the sound dimension of the comic strip and the audiobook. Analysis of the record broadens our understanding of the audio experience of The Intrepid Alix. However, we will see that it cannot be considered simply as a soundtrack to the comic. Indeed, I will demonstrate that The Intrepid Alix does not need an audiobook edition in order to integrate a sound experience. Si la digitalisation et la narration transmédiatique nous invitent aujourd’hui à élargir notre expérience sensorielle de la bande dessinée, depuis longtemps l’adaptation et le merchandising nous offrent des occasions similaires. Comme l’a souligné Ian Hague, dans son livre Comics and the Senses, admettre l’évidence que « materiality matters » implique de « challenge the idea that comics are a purely visual medium ». Pour faire cette démonstration, cette recherche s’attache à un « Disque d’aventure » produit par le label français Festival en 1960 : Alix l’intrépide. Le premier épisode de la série de bande dessinée francophone Alix de Jacques Martin a paru en feuilleton dans le magazine Tintin (1948-1949), ensuite en album (1956), avant d’être adapté en audiolivre sur disque vinyle par Jean Maurel (1960). Faisant un premier pas vers une approche multisensorielle, cet article s’intéresse à la dimension sonore de la bande dessinée et de l’audiolivre. L’étude du disque élargit notre compréhension de la réception acoustique d’Alix l’intrépide. Nous verrons toutefois qu’il ne peut pas être considéré comme la bande-son de l’album de bande dessinée, qui n’a pas besoin de lui pour se sonoriser. |
