Preference was given to the New Zealand-published source texts over those printed in the United Kingdom, where apparently minor adjustments to Frame’s sometimes non-standard use of language structures and punctuation had altered the tone and occasionally nuances of meaning. We made the assumption that these were not only deliberate choices on the author’s part, but indeed core elements of her voice. Transferring a text from one culture to another always results in a confrontation between differing stylistic norms and cultural expectations, and The Lagoon offers a number of key examples of these issues.
