The cataloguing of the Portuguese presence in the newspaper allows to glimpse how is seen Portugal in the newspaper (common history and greatness in the past, Portuguese politics today in order to compare it with the own country, stories and anecdotes of travels, inferior customs…), but also, when talking about the other, in a veiled way, we can see how Spain feels with itself (political trouble, feeling of inferiority, resentment over the loss of an own territory….) El artículo interpreta qué visión se ofrece de Portugal, su historia y su cultura, en La Ilustración Española y Americana, entre 1869 y 1873, un período especialmente conflictivo en la sociedad española. La catalogación de la presencia portuguesa en la revista permite vislumbrar cómo se considera Portugal en el periódico (historia y grandeza comunes en el pasado, política actual portuguesa para compararla con el propio país, relatos y anécdotas de viajes, costumbres inferiores…), pero también, al hablar del otro, de una forma velada, se ve cómo se siente España consigo misma (convulsión política, sentimiento de inferioridad, resentimiento por la pérdida de un territorio propio...).
