The Attic inscription of the imperial period IG II2 3649, which contains fragments of the impressive civic career of an Athenian citizen whose name is lost, has received little attention by historians. This contribution first offers a new archaeological study of the monument on which this text was engraved, initially a hermaic pillar which later underwent several phases of re‑use and re‑cutting. The study then proposes an epigraphic commentary on the text, with new restorations. Finally, the historical analysis of the document, in particular with its mention of the exercise of an exceptionally large number of the office of agonothetes, permit us to date the text in the second half of the 2nd century AD and to identify the honoured citizen most likely as Herodes Atticus, the famous and wealthy Athenian euergetes of the Antonine period. |
