A red‑figure hydria offers a novel mythological scene: a satyr faces Herakles, kneeling. Around them, a sphinx and birds seem to be watching the scene. Discovered in 1955 at Apollonia in Illyria, the vase is today on display at the archaeological museum at the site. This article provides a detailed analysis of the iconography and models that may have influenced the painter, in order to refine the analysis, as well as to determine the dating and origin of the vase, which is probably local. |
