The man whose name, Pasion son of Dikaiarchos, is written on a lead tablet published by D. Jordan in 2003 (SEG LIII 256) is indeed, as the editor has maintained, the famous banker Pasion; however, the interpretation of the text proposed by Jordan does not seem convincing. Here we have not a letter but a text intended to be used in a piece of magic, in a katadesmos against certain persons, three of whom are known to us from Pseudo-Demosthenes’ Against Nikostratos. The circumstances in which Pasion decided to act against these persons using magic cannot be established; it can be guessed, however, that he was worried about the relationship between them and his elder son, Apollodoros. This magic is not likely to have been connected with a judicial action. It is interesting, if not surprising, to see that a very rich and influential man like the banker Pasion could have recourse to magic.
