Almost two thirds of passive forms are mental processes, including mathematical processes which form over half of the total. Some articles use first person pronoun subjects readily, while others use them hardly at all. Three quarters of the verbs with first person pronouns subjects occur with mental processes with half being mathematical. Nominalization has been common in scientific writing since the 18th century, and increased during the 20th century. This is frequently used within the thematic structure to build up the argument structure of a text. These features can be studied from a number of different theoretical perspectives, but systemic functional linguistics provides a total theory of language which shows how they form part of the same unified structure.
