The collection is remarkable for its extensive range of materials, encompassing topics such as literature, history, religion and the occult sciences. The items were acquired from various local sources, providing a valuable insight into the acquisition and circulation of books in the region during this period. This article thus seeks to reconstruct some of the local private libraries that formed the basis of Maxwell’s collection. In doing so it aims to identify the types of texts that were of interest in the Malay peninsula during the nineteenth century. At the same time, it will explore the relationships between Maxwell and the original owners, placing the collection within the broader context of local and colonial book-collecting activities.
