16 – Animals and People. Hunting, Fishing, Stockbreeding and Diet in Sumatra from Late Eleventh to Early Fourteenth Century: the Example of the Kota Cina Settlement Site in the Strait of Malacca

The size of the animal remains corpus uncovered at Kota Cina (21,900 remains of mammals, birds, reptiles, fish and molluscs) makes it possible to document the dietary practices of the populations of the Strait of Malacca at the time. The great variety of animal species inventoried (75 taxonomic rank...

The great variety of animal species inventoried (75 taxonomic ranks identified) is consistent with the richness of the local biotopes, both terrestrial and aquatic. Domestic species contribute only to a small extent to the meat diet. Fishing, hunting and shellfish collection provide most of the protein intake. The aquatic and terrestrial estuary zone adjacent to the site provides the majority of the catches. Analysis of the spatial distribution of the bones suggests the existence of areas specialised in the cutting up and sharing of bodies on return from fishing or hunting, a term that would seem less inappropriate with regard to the capture of marine turtles, which are predominant, thus suggesting the existence of specialised predation.
