6 – Earthenware from Kota Cina: Petrographic Study

Petrographic analysis on thin sections should assist the classification of the earthenware, the largest material group, and allow the definition of locally produced wares. After a preliminary classification by macroscopical and technical characteristics, 58 samples were selected, representative of...

After a preliminary classification by macroscopical and technical characteristics, 58 samples were selected, representative of the most important technical groups. In addition, nine local sediment samples from the excavation area were studied, as well as two sherds from traditional pottery workshops, one situated 50 km north of Kota Cina, the other on the west coast of the island. The sediment samples show a typical assemblage of volcanic inclusions (feldspar-amphibole-biotite-volcanic ash/volcanic rock). Based on this, the fabrics were subdivided into two categories: fabrics containing the typical volcanic assemblage and those with other types of inclusions. Pottery showing fabrics of the first category is considered produced locally, while fabrics of the second category indicate origins outside the Kota Cina area. The petrographic results led to a simplified macroscopical classification.
