However, one of the most recent and comprehensive tributes to and updates on Orwell’s famous dystopia is probably Russell T. Davies’s miniseries Years and Years (2019). Set in a post-Brexit Britain, it follows an average “Middle England” family from Manchester over the course of a decade of turmoil starting in 2019 and can be seen as a prequel to Orwell’s book. Oceania’s guiding principles are looming in a sort of Big Brother’s world in the making (with omnipresent screens, artificial intelligence and biotechnology) in which all the preconditions for a totalitarian regime to take over the UK are already in place. Populist leaders resort to Newspeak euphemisms to obfuscate the harsh reality of their policies and only common decency can be pitted against them. Like its unavowed model, the miniseries serves as a wake-up call for technophile, numbed 21st century audiences since its conclusion is that it is up to citizens to reclaim and keep control over the past, the present and the future to ensure the survival of democratic institutions. Le Royaume-Uni a régulièrement produit des films et des séries qui font écho à certains aspects de 1984 quel que soit leur genre (science-fiction, horreur, thriller, drame). Cependant, l’un des hommages les plus récents et les plus complets à la célèbre dystopie d’Orwell est probablement la mini-série Years and Years (2019) de Russell T. Davies. Se déroulant dans une Angleterre post-Brexit à partir de 2019, elle suit une famille de la classe moyenne de Manchester au cours d’une décennie très troublée et peut être considérée comme une préquelle du livre d’Orwell. Les principes directeurs d’Océania se profilent dans un monde de Big Brother en devenir (avec écrans omniprésents, intelligence artificielle et biotechnologie) dans lequel toutes les conditions préalables à l’avènement d’un régime totalitaire au Royaume-Uni sont déjà en place. Les dirigeants populistes ont recours à des euphémismes dignes de la Novlangue pour masquer la dure réalité de leurs politiques et seule la « décence ordinaire » chère à Orwell peut leur être opposée. À l’image de son modèle inavoué, la mini-série est un avertissement au public technophile et mithridatisé du XXIe siècle puisqu’elle se clôt sur l’idée qu’il appartient aux citoyens de se réapproprier et de garder le contrôle sur le passé, le présent et l’avenir pour assurer la survie des institutions démocratiques. |
