However, whether they are Greek or Latin, many navigators had experienced what is was to sail in the Indian Ocean at that time, offering a constantly evolving representation of this area. Les navigations en océan Indien, bien attestées dans la littérature périplographique et géographique ancienne, posent une série de questions à l’historien. Plus encore que d’autres, elles sont parcellaires et ne renseignent que sur une partie des données souhaitées. Elles ne permettent pas non plus d’attester l’existence de représentations cartographiques. Pourtant, qu’ils soient grecs ou latins, de nombreux navigateurs ont fait l’expérience de la navigation en océan Indien au fil de l’Antiquité, proposant une représentation en constante évolution.
