| description |
This volume collects the proceedings of 2025 AMPAH (Annual Meeting of Postgraduates in Ancient History), held at the University of Molise, and investigates the multiple forms taken by cultural encounters, clashes, and the reception of such episodes in the ancient and late antique world. Through an interdisciplinary approach combining history, archaeology, philology, the history of religions, literature, and material culture, the contributions explore how individuals, communities, and political powers constructed, negotiated, and reformulated identities, boundaries, and representations of otherness. From the theoretical discussion of the concept of Romanization and its interpretative limits to the analysis of Greek cults reinterpreted through a Roman lens, of Christian reworkings of the classical tradition, and of frontier dynamics in the Mediterranean world, the volume shows how cultural contact cannot be reduced to a simple process of assimilation or opposition. Its various sections highlight the permeability of religious, political, ethnic, and literary boundaries, examining both phenomena of syncretism and appropriation and the dynamics of conflict, exclusion, and the construction of the “Other.” The contributions together outline a complex and plural picture in which cultures and identities emerge as historically situated, mobile, and relational realities, continually produced through exchanges, frictions, mediations, and reuses. The volume thus aims to offer not only a reflection on the ancient world, but also a critical tool for rethinking, in light of the past, the modern categories of culture, boundary, identity, and belonging. |
