The Theory of Semantic Blocks (Carel, 2011a), derived from the Theory of Argumentation Within Language (Anscombre and Ducrot, 1983), is based on some novel notions. One of the most important of these notions is that of ‘argumentative predicate’, which refers to the single predicate expressed by an ‘argumentative sequence.’ This article aims to clarify the notion of argumentative predicate through a comparison with that of ‘ ad hoc concept’ developed within the Relevance Theory framework (Sperber and Wilson, 1986b/85, 1989 ; Carston, 2002a), to which it seems that the notion of argumentative predicate can be assimilated at first glance.Cairn free access
