However, the challenges of going beyond the narratives constructed through their institutional support quickly became apparent. To encourage a freer form of storytelling, participants were invited to create a visual representation of their journey during the interview. This article revisits this methodological experiment, presenting four case studies that highlight its key contributions and limitations. By renewing the interview conditions, the visual production helped reveal the symbolic significance of participation in an integration programme within the broader life trajectory. Nevertheless, some participants reproduced institutional expectations in their drawings, or even used them to demonstrate that they had internalized them.Dans le cadre d’une recherche doctorale, réalisée entre 2020 et 2023, prévoyant des entretiens avec les bénéficiaires d’un dispositif d’insertion départemental, l’usage du récit de vie est envisagé de prime abord comme une méthode pertinente. Cependant, la difficulté d’aller au-delà des discours construits par leur accompagnement institutionnel est rapidement constatée. Il est alors proposé de réaliser une production graphique pendant l’entretien, afin de raconter son parcours de façon plus libre. L’article propose de revenir sur cette expérimentation, en présentant quatre cas qui serviront d’exemples pour en souligner les principaux apports et limites. En renouvelant les conditions d’entretien, la production graphique a permis de rendre visible la place symbolique de la participation à une action d’insertion dans le parcours global. Néanmoins, certains usagers ont reproduit sur le papier les attentes institutionnelles, voire en ont profité pour montrer qu’ils les avaient intégrées.Cairn free access
