In these households, kinship relations are organised around mothers and several generations of women support each other. Migrant women can ask them to look after their children, but this support comes at a social cost. Because the central role of mothers is legitimised by day-to-day care practices that are incompatible with migration, women who resort to such placements occupy a more peripheral position within households. Other maternal figures take over and migrant mothers must do with this competition during and after migration. Thus, starting from the changes caused by female migration, this article invites to consider childcare beyond mothers and to analyse the interplay between the material and social dimensions of kinship ties.À partir d’entretiens biographiques portant sur des migrations d’employées domestiques ayant eu lieu dans les années 1950-1970 aux Seychelles, cet article souligne le rôle ambivalent des maisonnées matrifocales dans l’ajustement aux contraintes migratoires pesant sur la prise en charge des enfants. Cairn free access
