Although often jointly labeled as CRT , Critical Race Theory and Critical Theory of “Race” are two distinct lines of research that have developed in the U.S. towards the end of the 20th century. For it is not indeed the same kind of criticism that leveled, on the one hand, by legal experts and, on the other hand, by social scientists and philosophers when they offer a “critical theory” of race (or racism). In both however, one aims at understanding race as a situated socio-legal or socio-political construction, an endeavor that is at odds with the essentialism CRT is sometimes blamed for. Yet, the constructivist meaning of “race” allows for the criticism of colorblind egalitarianism, according to which, in order to achieve social justice, one should not take into account racial distinctions. The analysis of these movements reveals the genealogy of the racial question is at the heart of their critical ambition. Cairn free access
