Ignorant of the renewal of Bulgarian nationalism, the novelist who had shown himself to be passionate about geopolitics is in this book almost exclusively sensitive to human geography and economic considerations, neglecting history and story alike. Inspired if not partly copied from the Voyage de Paris à Bucharest published in Le Tour du Monde between 1861 and 1866, the novel goes so far as to reject even the anecdotes proper to travel books in favour of a brief touristic overview of the banks of the Danube. Is this what Verne had in mind as a “geographical novel” or is it a sign of the genre's exhaustion?Cairn free access
