Although Leconte de Lisle had a certain disdain for contemporary composers, he featured music prominently in his works, from the earliest ( La Mélodie incarnée, 1846) to the last ( L’Apollonide, 1889), and particularly in Poèmes antiques, where ancient Greek music is often mentioned. In many of his poems, music appears because of the bucolic tradition that was a major source of inspiration to him, but he renewed the genre of idyll by stressing Dionysiac aspects of Greek dance and song. In several poems he utilized the technical notion of the mode in order to add Greek local color. In the end his ideas concerning rhythm led him to believe in the close relationship between metaphysics and poetry. Cairn free access |
