This paper explores the reasons why Tasso and his Poem progressively lost their status of a literary topos in the early 1800’s as to become almost completely forgotten by the end of the century. Three conjectures are put forward. First, the Jerusalem liberated was eclipsed by its author’s life, which had become an emblem of the Romantic movement, this could explain why it was gone with the latter’s wreck in the second half of the 19th century. Second, Romantic writers wishfully believed in fictitious biographies of Tasso, and involuntarily contributed to deprive the author and his work of any authority. Finally, the fact that the Roman-tics’knowledge of him was indirect and mediated by other arts, painting and music, condemned Tasso to the role of a mere literary foil. Cairn free access
