The relationship between bilingualism and language assessment results in dementia sufferers, especially in Alzheimer’s disease (AD), remains underexplored. Drawing on the Boston Naming Test (BNT) (Kaplan et al., 1978), which is widely used for assessing naming capacities, this study examines how the...

Drawing on the Boston Naming Test (BNT) (Kaplan et al., 1978), which is widely used for assessing naming capacities, this study examines how the language used during assessments affects the diagnosis of language disorders in bilingual individuals. The research involved ninety-three bilingual healthy controls (HC) (mean age = 67.99 ± 9.3) and twenty-nine AD patients (mean age = 77.1 ± 5.9), including twenty-six with mild dementia and three with moderate dementia. The bilingualism subtype was determined using a previously validated bilingualism index (Kassir et al., 2023). All participants underwent a set of tests including the mini-mental state examination (Folstein et al., 1975) and the BNT in both Arabic and French. The sensitivity of the BNT for identifying naming disorders was found to be similar across languages (BNT in French: 0.645, 95 percent CI: 0.522–0.768, p = 0.019; BNT in Arabic: 0.653, 95 percent CI: 0.529–0.776, p = 0.013), regardless of the type of bilingualism. Among balanced or unbalanced bilinguals, the use of either language demonstrated similar sensitivity in the detection of language disorders with the BNT.La relation entre le bilinguisme et l’évaluation langagière dans la démence, particulièrement pour la maladie d’Alzheimer (MA), reste peu explorée.
