The sworn form, a veritable matrix of political legitimacy during the medieval period, has been the subject of recent research. However, the bull of Urban IV, dated July 6, 1263, has never been the subject of a specific study. This diplomatic document released the future Philip III (1270–1285) from an oath of tutelage he had sworn to his mother, Queen Margaret of Provence (1221–1295). The aim of this paper is to determine the context in which it was written and to study its motivations and scope, showing that the contestation of Queen Margaret’s Provençal heritage is probably the key to explaining, in part, the limited posterity of this French queen’s image. The edition and translation of this bull also highlight the pontiff’s personal and spiritual encouragement of the young Philip, who was ultimately far more capable of governing than the oath itself suggested.Cairn restricted access
