Holcot knows above all three ages: childhood (pueritia), youth (iuventus), and old age (senectus). In his Introitus to a lost commentary on the Genesis, he draws on medical theories inherited from Galen, Avicenna, but also Aristotle, who define old age as a process of cooling. In his commentary on the Book of Wisdom, lectio 54, he takes up in extenso Aristotle’s portrait of youth in the Rhetoric, which he interprets as a text of moral philosophy. The rhetorical framework established by Holcot in the texts studied outlines, in an almost humanistic way, a reflection of his own academic community, as it is mirrored in its sociological composition and its pedagogical and moral objectives, through the lens of its scientific and literary sources. Cairn restricted access
