It is rare for pilgrims and travelers to reach their destinations and explore the regions they wish to visit without the intervention of a few passeurs or mediators. Journeys to the Holy Land in the Middle Ages are eloquent examples of this. Moreover, contact with the Other rarely takes place without linguistic mediation, as communication with the Other is one of the major problems that the homo viator faces. Consequently, intermediaries, Latiners, and dragomans intervene to enable Here and Elsewhere to meet. These mediators form a group in their own right, whose identity deserves to be investigated. In this article, we propose to analyze the figure of the mediator through the study of two travel narratives from the fifteenth century: Guillebert de Lannoy’s Voyages et ambassades and Bertrandon de la Broquière’s Voyage d’Outremer, two works that highlight diverse mediation phenomena. In particular, we look at the character of the mediator in the two narratives considered, and at the place the authors give them: do they give them an identity of their own, or do they simply note their function? We also show how Guillebert de Lannoy and Bertrandon de la Broquière, themselves ambassadors and/or spies, may embody the role of mediator, acting as intermediaries between different cultures as well as between the « I » and the Other.Cairn free access
