DABROWSKA, Passport to the Great Beyond. Essay on medieval mentality The presence of funeral deposits in medieval graves was long considered evidence of paganism. Yet objects, sometimes even texts were at times left in the graves of priests, monks, or church prelates, beyond the usual vestments and insignia. These objects consisted mainly of wafers and wine, whether consecrated or not, relics, crosses and other objects along with the absolution formula, the text of the Credo, or papal bulls. Was this a supertitious practice or part of a truly Christian ritual? The answer is clear : all these practices are based on Holy Scriptures and the canons of the faith. They are dedicated to the Lord. Their function is to carry the message that the dead person was absolved of his sins and is thus worthy of redemption. In this respect, they can be called a « passport to the great Beyond».Cairn free access
