La violence et le sang dont est entourée Yseut, ses contradictions et sa perversité s’expliquent mieux si on interprète le personnage comme l’ont traditionnellement été Créd, Deirdre, Gráinne et Rhiannon, c’est à dire comme une déesse évhémérisée. Cette interprétation est justifiée par les ressemblances frappantes entre les cinq héroïnes et elle permet d’apprécier les textes français à leur juste valeur, non pas comme imparfaits, comme l’ont parfois suggéré les critiques, mais comme témoins d’une tradition très ancienne.Cl. A new light can be thrown on Yseut’s character in the selected text through a comparison with the heroins of three Irish sagas, The Story of Cano, son of Gartnán, The Exile of the Sons of Uisliu and the Pursuit of Diarmaid and Gráinne, and with the Welsh queen in a branch of the Mabinogion, Pwyll lord of Dyved. Considering Yseut as a euhemerized goddess as Créd, Deirdre, Gráinne and Rhiannon have traditionally been, provides an explanation to the violence and blood which surround her and to her contradictions and perversity. Parallels between the five heroines fully justifies this approach, which vindicates Old French texts that some critics have considered flawed while they actually bear witness to a very ancient tradition.Cairn free access |
