In their quest for an ideal prince, which the Duke of Urbino, Federico di Montefeltro, probably embodied more than any other, 15th century Italian thinkers fashioned the image of a prince who would be both a man of war and a man of letters, and favouring more the latter (which require peace to thrive) than the former. But beyond this ideal, recurring instability demanded that princes rely on extra legitimacy which, depending on the political contexts, would depend on virtue or on lineage. A new development consisted in princes now calling on works of art (particularly painting, and even more architecture) to buttress and illustrate both their legitimacy and their ideal dream, as though they were erecting their own myths. This highly political patronage verging on propaganda appears as the tangible sign of a political evolution which as it gives art a higher status also enforces political control on it.Cairn free access
