Mais au-delà de cet idéal, l’instabilité que connut l’Italie dans ce siècle exigeait de la part de ces princes un surcroît de légitimité qui selon les situations politiques s’appuyait soit sur la vertu, soit sur le lignage. Fait nouveau, les souverains firent désormais appel aux œuvres d’art pour asseoir et illustrer tant cette légitimité que leur rêve d’idéal, comme pour construire leur mythe. Les peintures et plus encore l’architecture y contribuèrent largement. Ce mécénat, éminemment politique sinon de propagande, apparaît comme le signe tangible d’une évolution politique qui, tout en accordant à l’art une place prééminente, l’assujettit de plus en plus au pouvoir. In their quest for an ideal prince, which the Duke of Urbino, Federico di Montefeltro, probably embodied more than any other, 15th century Italian thinkers fashioned the image of a prince who would be both a man of war and a man of letters, and favouring more the latter (which require peace to thrive) than the former. But beyond this ideal, recurring instability demanded that princes rely on extra legitimacy which, depending on the political contexts, would depend on virtue or on lineage. A new development consisted in princes now calling on works of art (particularly painting, and even more architecture) to buttress and illustrate both their legitimacy and their ideal dream, as though they were erecting their own myths. This highly political patronage verging on propaganda appears as the tangible sign of a political evolution which as it gives art a higher status also enforces political control on it.Cairn free access
