Beskrivelse
Summary:Collected by Spanish missionaries in the 16th century on the basis of oral testimonies, pre-Columbian poetry in the Nahuatl language seems as much a survival of a pre-Columbian tradition as a missiological invention. Throughout the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries, we had an even more limited overview: the few poems known to the public, although they were attributed to Aztec monarchs, were more in keeping with a Western literary tradition that gave pride of place to an epicurean vein. The reception of classical Nahuatl poetry, marked by exotic forgeries and various ideological manipulations, thus illustrates some of the ambivalences of the notion of extra-European literature.
