Novalis oppose à ce récit de formation goethéen un récit initiatique dans lequel le personnage éponyme devient, au terme d’un voyage entre Eisenach et Augsburg, le poète qu’il est destiné à devenir dès le rêve par lequel s’ouvre le récit. Œuvre poétique où la poésie s’autodéfinit et s’autocélèbre, la partie achevée du roman, intitulée L’Attente, peut être considérée, avec Sternbald de Tieck, comme un des premiers exemples du roman d’artiste. The novel Heinrich von Ofterdingen by Novalis, a seminal text of early German romanticism, points up the eagerness of such poets as had come together within the Athenäum to measure up to Goethe by devising genuinely romantic fiction as a response to his Wilhelm Meister, taken to task as it was for betraying poetry in its ending on Wilhelm’s forbearance from any dramatic pursuit in favour of profitable incorporation into the world at large. Novalis pits the Goethean narrative focused on instruction against a narrative dealing with initiation in which, following a journey from Eisenach to Augsburg, the eponymous character grows into the poet he was meant to become as early as the dream that starts off the story. A poetical work which stands for self-celebration of a poetry defining itself as such, the completed section of the novel, entitled Expectation, can be regarded, along with Sternbald by Tieck, as one of the foremost specimens of an artist’s novel.
