During the 20th and 21st centuries, simultaneously in fictions such as Un cabinet d’amateur (1979) by Georges Perec, La tabla de Flandes (1990) by Arturo Pérez-Reverte, or Les Onze (2009) by Pierre Michon, the motif of the fake painting—fictional but thought to be real by readers who are mystified by the narrator—, becomes more and more present. Shown as a true enigma, the fake painting is the origin of a playful poetics of inquiry that, while pretending to look for the meaning of the work of art, suggests a literary answer to the debates regarding the legitimacy of authorized discourses of art and the relationships between painting and literature.
