Yet, the term itself—Happy Arabia—poses several problematics when the literary works produced by this space (intellectually and geographically) are analysed so as to testify to the credibility and validity of the alleged “happiness”. This paper assumes that “Happy Arabia” is just an ‘imagined community’ which was viewed as happy by a colonizer who never paid attention to the inner intricate social webs including gender relations. Such an assumption requires a thorough reading of the position of women, a reading that uses literary narratives to examine the “space” of women. That is to say, the paper is to explore the shape of “space” in several novels, whether the women are confined to the private or they have access to the public, whether the space consumed by women is acknowledged by society or condemned ; and finally, whether such space equalizes the power relations or reproduces a certain ‘illegitimate/ legitimate’ status quo concerning women.Cairn free access |
