The image of the Occident in Endo Shusaku’s workA bearer of Christian moral values, the foreigner allows Endo Shusaku to question Japanese psychology. He paints two distinct portraits of the Occidental in his novels. The infallible missionary contrasts with the weak-willed Japanese. However, because of his exceeding willfulness, the first one is only an example for the last one of what he should not be. On the other hand, the secular foreigner takes the place of paragon, and contributes to the emergence of a moral consciousness in the Japanese. This foreigner calls into question the Japanese common sense which gives far too much credit to social judgment. Otherwise, the missionary "japanizes" Christ when he no longer has vigor. In this way, Endo paints the portrait of a « pitiful Messiah ».Cairn free access
