Après une nécessaire mise au point de conjectures contradictoires, l’article se concentre sur la relation de l’auteur à la littérature française, en l’occurrence sur ses mérites de traducteur et de critique, sur l’influence exercée par ses maîtres français sur son apprentissage littéraire et son succès ultérieur.Lafcadio Hearn is first and foremost known as an enlightener of an unfamiliar Japan. He also did much to familiarize the world with French writers of his time, among whom were Gautier, Flaubert, Maupassant and Loti. This paper traces his connection with the French language back to his purported stay as a student in France. Yet, there has always been biographical controversy concerning the name and location of the school he has himself shrouded in mystery. After having briefly dismissed contradictory conjectures, we shall focus on Hearn’s relationship to French literature, on his merits as a translator and literary critic, then assess the part played by Hearn’s French masters in his literary apprenticeship and success.Cairn free access
