The notion of “postcolony” (Achille Mbembe) identifies the historical trajectory of societies recently emerging from the experience of colonization and the violence which the colonial relationship involves. Through the examination of works by Sony Labou Tansi from Congo-Brazzaville and Dambudzo Marechera from Zimbabwe, the paper shows that the postcolonial state is frequently embodied by the figure of the fat, lecherous, imbecile dictator which lends itself to hyperbole, caricature and parody. This grotesque character becomes an appropriate symbol of the mad quality of postcolonial power and of the fundamental disturbances affecting the society in which the writers live.Cairn free access
